You can search for speeches using one or more of the following criteria:
- Language: all official EU languages, a number of candidate country languages, plus Russian, Chinese and Arabic are listed. Languages are listed in alphabetical order.
- Level: Specifies the stage of training for which the speech is appropriate: basic, beginner, intermediate, advanced/test-type and very advanced. Please note that basic speeches are best suited for consecutive exercises without notes and are only available for some languages.
- Use: simultaneous and consecutive. This is in no way binding but it gives you an indication of the best use of different speeches in different phases of the learning process.
- Domain: indicates the topic according to current EU policy areas. There is also a general domain for topics not covered by the policy areas.
- Type: helps to narrow the category of speeches which you are looking for: conference, debate, hearing, interview, and pedagogical material. Feel free to leave this field empty or specify your choice.
Pedagogical material type consists of speeches delivered by experienced EU interpreters and university trainers. These speeches are tailored specifically to the needs of student interpreters for practice in both consecutive and simultaneous mode and are adapted to the different stages of their training path. - Speech no.: it is a unique number given to each speech. Leave other fields empty when indicating a speech number in this field.
- Keyword: Helps to search for speeches about a certain topic by entering a single word (e.g. "climate", "bank" or "multilingualism", according to whatever you are looking for) to additionally filter the results.
You don’t always have to select all criteria: you can just select one criterion or several or all criteria (except the speech number, where all other fields are not necessary).
If you search for speeches without indicating any criteria, all speeches available in the Speech Repository will be listed.
Search results
After clicking the Apply button, you will get the “Results” page, listing all speeches corresponding to the entered search criteria. The number of hits corresponding to your search criteria is displayed in the left part of the screen just above the list of results.
The following headings appear:
- Speech number: indicates a unique number given to each speech
- Title: contains the title of the speech. By clicking on the speech title hyperlink you can access the page with the speech and all relevant information
- Language: specifies the language of a speech
- Domain: shows the topics of a speech
- Type: indicates whether it is a conference, press conference, debate, hearing, interview or pedagogical material
- Level: indicates one of the five levels: basic, beginner, intermediate, advanced/test-type and very advanced
- Use: indicates whether a speech is suitable for simultaneous or consecutive practice
- Duration: indicates the length of a speech
You can sort the list by clicking on any of the underlined table headers in the results table.
Speech details
By clicking on the title of a speech in the search results table, you can access its details and a couple of links to further functionalities related to the speech:
- Copyright information
- Place and date of the speech
- Description: helps to quickly understand the context and topic of the speech.
- Speech number
- Duration
- Language
- Level
- Type
- Use
- Domain(s)
- Terminology: contains the terms which a professional interpreter considered the most important and relevant for the speech. This field may also contain numbers, abbreviations, proper names and quotations in another language.
