After the 1999 World Conference on Science in Budapest, UNESCO proclaimed 10 November as World Science Day for Peace and Development in order to draw attention to the role of science in fostering peace. As 10 November highlights the link between science and society, it also stresses the importance of involving citizens in debates on scientific issues and informing them about the most recent developments. The purpose of the World Science Day for Peace and Development is raising awareness about the role of science in a world dealing with problems such as climate change or armed conflicts, as well as fostering cooperation and international solidarity in research. As an example of the latter, UNESCO supported the establishment of the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organisation.
The 20th edition of World Science Day for Peace and Development will explore the theme Building Climate-Ready Communities with a focus on climate change induced challenges faced by societies and ways in which science and innovation can help respond to them.
