On 11 November Poland commemorates the anniversary of the restoration of the country’s sovereignty with the establishment of the Second Polish Republic in 1918, when the nation separated from the German, Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires. The state of Poland had ceased to exist on the world map for 123 years until the end of World War I.
Poland became a Member State of the European Union in 2004, which was when the country’s language was added to the list of official EU languages. The language is spoken by approximately 50 million people in the EU.
Did you know that Poles celebrate Christmas Eve (24 December) with a 12-dish-dinner (kolacja wigilijna), which is traditionally meat free and cannot be served until the first star is seen in the sky? During Easter, Poles have a celebration called Wet Monday (Śmigus Dyngus) when they pour water on girls to make sure that they get married. Poland might also be the only country in the world where everyone wishes their friends to live for ‘100 years’ (sto lat) on every birthday.
