On 11 November, Poland commemorates the anniversary of the restoration of the country’s sovereignty with the establishment of the Second Polish Republic in 1918, when the nation separated from the German, Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires. The state of Poland had ceased to exist on the world map for 123 years until the end of World War I.
Poland became a Member State of the European Union in 2004, which was when the country’s language was added to the list of official EU languages. Approximately 50 million people in the EU speak Polish.
