17th November - International Students’ Day

On 17 November, we celebrate International Students Day to commemorate the storming of Czech universities by the Nazis in 1939. Following an anti-Nazi demonstration, the regime sent 1200 students to concentration camps and closed all Czech universities. Since 1941, 17 November has symbolised  the fight for freedom and democracy. The commemoration of this event was later used by students in 1989 to protest against the ruling Czechoslovakian Communist Party, leading to a violent confrontation with law enforcement. The incident sparked the Velvet Revolution – a peaceful transition of power and conversion to a democratic system.
