18 November – Proclamation Day of the Republic of Latvia

18/11/2021

On 18 November 1918, the People’s Council of Latvia proclaimed the independence of the Republic of Latvia – a state that would remain independent until 17 June 1940 and the Soviet occupation of the country. The sovereign state of Latvia was restored 51 years later, on 21 August 1991.

The Proclamation Day festivities include various events such as people singing the Latvian national anthem together or torchlight processions – a tradition dating back to the 1920s. The biggest procession takes place in the capital Riga. The route starts at the monument of Latvia’s first Prime Minister Karlis Ulmanis and ends at the Freedom Monument.

What better opportunity to commemorate this important event than by practising your interpreting skills with one of the Speech Repository’s Latvian speeches? And don’t forget our #StayHome collection!
