“The main hope of a nation lies in the proper education of its youth” (Erasmus of Rotterdam)
On 15 June we celebrate the 33rd anniversary of the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students, better known as Erasmus. Crucial in fostering European identity, the Erasmus programme is one of the greatest successes of European integration.
Launched in 1987, this student exchange programme was named after the Dutch humanist, philosopher and theologian Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam who, between the 15th and the 16th century, travelled around Europe to study and discover new cultures.
In 1994, Erasmus became part of the Socrates Programme and from 2007 to 2013 it was one of the pillars of the Lifelong Learning Programme. 2014 saw the birth of Erasmus +, the EU's comprehensive programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe.
