On 10 January 1946, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) met for the first time in the Methodist Central Hall in London, hosting the representatives of 51 nations. After gathering in different cities for a few annual sessions, in 1952 the General Assembly moved to the permanent Headquarters of the United Nations in New York City.
75 years on, the United Nations General Assembly is still the UN deliberative, policy-making and representative body. Among its responsibilities are the approval of the UN budget, the election of non-permanent members of the Security Council and of the members of other UN councils and bodies, the expression of recommendations on matters of cooperation to maintain international peace and security, as well as the promotion of international development, political cooperation and human rights.
