Happy World Children’s Day 2020!

18/11/2020

Today we celebrate not only the happiness that children bring all around the globe, but also the child within us, who maintains the spark of joy alive in our hearts.

World Children’s Day was first established in 1954 as Universal Children's Day and is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote the protection of children’s rights worldwide and the constant improvement of their standard of life and opportunities.

On this very day in 1959, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. Later on in 1989, the General Assembly would also pick this day to adopt the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Would you like to prove to yourself that you care about children’s lives? Do so by challenging yourself to get all the correct answers in the following quiz whilst practising your interpreting skills at the same time!

  1. What is the European network Small Size’s main reason for existence? Speech 23195 (IT)
  2. In the whooping cough epidemic that ravaged Japan in 1979, how many cases were confirmed and how many children perished from the respiratory tract infection? Speech 29325 (EN)
  3. How many children does the NGO Save Children estimate that are used every year as soldiers in conflict-ridden countries such as Colombia, Pakistan or Sierra Leone? Speech 22664 (ES)
  4. In 1971, what was the percentage of households in developed countries that had children living in them? Speech 22376 (EN)

And remember, ‘it is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye’.

Happy practice!
