Whether it is the bees humming around your ice cream cone in spring, the cows who produced the milk to make the ice cream or the grass these cows have been pasturing – all of that is closely related to the topic of biological diversity. Our biodiversity resources are the basis upon which humans have built their civilisations and it is therefore of paramount importance to protect these resources. This is why annually, on 22 May, the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) is celebrated. The day highlights the crucial role of biodiversity and aims to promote different biodiversity issues.
In 2021, the day is observed under the motto “We’re part of the solution”, building on the momentum created by the 2020 theme “Our solutions are in nature”. This slogan served as a reminder that biodiversity is the answer to multiple sustainable development challenges, such as climate change, health problems or food and water security.
