It is important to raise awareness of violence against women because, since the COVID-19 outbreak, emerging data and reports from those on the front lines have shown that all types of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, have intensified. UN Women has called this phenomenon the shadow pandemic, growing amidst the COVID-19 crisis.
