International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

16/10/2020

Today is the United Nation’s International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

The European Union is characterised by its high living standards and its citizens can choose to live and work amongst 27 modern and developed countries. But did you know that poverty is still a major global issue? Here are two eye-opening facts provided by the UN:

  • In 2018, almost 8% of the world’s population lived on less than US$1.90 per person per day.
  • Most people living below the poverty line belong to two regions: Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

This year, the United Nations has decided to concentrate on other lesser known dimensions of modern-day poverty: the lack of social and environmental justice.

Climate change affects us all, but it is especially damning on communities living in underdeveloped countries with limited infrastructure and resources. The effects of climate change have affected many of these communities, destroying people’s homes and businesses, and forcing them to leave their homelands out of sheer necessity.
