On 6th April we celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.
It is a good opportunity to remember that sports can play a major role in improving people’s lives and that its values may even pave the way for peace.
Did you know?
51 years ago, in April 1971, what later became known as “Ping pong diplomacy” helped ease tensions between China and the United States. After the World Championship in Japan, table-tennis players from these respective national teams put friendship first and started to get to know each other (also thanks to our fellow interpreters!). Shortly after this, the US national team was invited to play friendly games in China and to discover its traditions and culture. And after sportsmen, came diplomats and politicians…
Sometimes sports can also help interpreters practise their skills… Challenge yourselves with these sport-related videos from our Speech Repository and let us know how it goes!
