18 November marks the Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia, locally known as Latvijas Republikas proklamēšanas diena. Indeed, on this very date in 1918, Latvia broke away from the Russian Empire and became independent after centuries of Swedish, Polish and Russian rule.
Many events take place throughout the country to commemorate this historical date, including a nationally televised address to the people by the President of the Republic of Latvia.
