On 16 February Lithuania celebrates one of its 2 independence days, the Restoration of the State Day, which should not be confused with the Restoration of Independence Day, celebrated on 11 March. Lithuania was in the midst of World War I. Instead of allying itself with Germany or Russia, Lithuania decided to declare itself independent. On 16 February 1918, the twenty members of the Council of Lithuania signed the Act of Independence, declaring Lithuania a sovereign democratic state.
Although democracy did not last for many years, Lithuanians still celebrate that date. That is why the Speech Repository team did not want to miss the opportunity to wish our Lithuanian users a happy Restoration of the State Day. Should you want to work on your interpreting skills from Lithuanian, please do not forget that we have a section with top-quality speeches delivered in Lithuanian.
