Romanian Great Union Day

30/11/2021

Great Union Day (also called Unification Day) is the national holiday of Romania, celebrated on 1st December. It commemorates the assembly of ethnic Romanian delegates held in the city of Alba Iulia, which declared the Union of Transylvania and the provinces of Bessarabia (the modern day Republic of Moldova) and Bukovina with Romania. The celebration of Great Union Day usually includes fireworks as well as a military parade in Bucharest, the capital. In 2018, over 4500 people gathered in Alba Iulia, forming the geographical outline of Romania to commemorate the centenary of Great Union Day. During the event, the world record for the largest human image of a country was set.

Romania joined the European Union in 2007 and, as such, Romanian became one of its 24 official languages.
