“If the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have four years left to live”
(Albert Einstein)
Can you hear the buzz? No, you are not dreaming, today is World Bee Day! This celebration was established by the United Nations in order to raise awareness on the importance of protecting bees and other pollinators to ensure stability in the global food supply and even eradicate hunger in developing countries, two fundamental elements of the SDGs. But why are bees such a crucial part of our ecosystem?
Well, these little insects pollinate a third of the food we eat and 80 percent of flowering plants. Therefore, thanks to bees we get not only delicious honey, but also fruit, vegetables and even chocolate and coffee!
Unfortunately though, pesticides, loss of habitats and climate change are causing the decline of bee populations, and that at an alarming rate.
Would you like to do something active for our buzzing friends? Check out here how to “Bee Engaged” in the protection of bees and join the live event that will take place today from 12.00 pm to 1.30 pm (CET).
