World Population Day 2021

11/07/2021

World Population Day is an annual event, observed on 11 July, which seeks to raise awareness of global population issues. The event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. It was inspired by the public interest in the Five Billion Day on 11 July 1987, the approximate date on which the world's population reached five billion people. World Population Day aims to increase people's awareness on topics such as the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health and human rights. On World Population Day, advocates from around the world are calling on leaders, policymakers, grassroots organisers, institutions and others to help make reproductive health and rights a reality for all.

Let’s now have a look at some statistics regarding the population of our planet.

  • In 1800, the world population reached one billion.
  • The United Nations projects the world population to reach 10 billion in the year 2057.
  • 31% – the percentage of the world population who are Christians.
