Born in Brussels, Ursula von der Leyen studied medicine at the Hannover Medical School, where she graduated in 1987. Her political career began in 1990, when she joined the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU).
Prior to her election as President of the European Commission on 16 July 2019, Ursula von der Leyen had served as Germany’s Minister of Defence, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, and Minister of Family Affairs and Youth.
