Every year from 25 to 31 May, the European Week Against Cancer (EWAC) is celebrated under the aegis of the Association of European Cancer Leagues in order to raise awareness about cancer as a public health issue. The main focus lies on sharing information about cancer prevention, access to treatment as well as the support for patients and survivors. During EWAC, different cancer organisations, the EU policy makers and the broad public engage in discussions and activities in order to highlight the importance of good health care – specifically when it comes to cancer treatments.
The EU actively supports this goal through the Beating Cancer Plan, which has been presented on the occasion of World Cancer Day on 3 February 2021. A new approach to cancer prevention, treatment and care is one of the key priorities of the European Health Union and the health policies of the von der Leyen Commission.
The subjects health in general and cancer specifically are of course relevant topics for interpretation – whether you work as a public service interpreter at the doctor’s office, as a conference interpreter at a medical conference or as an EU interpreter at the EU Health Summit. Therefore, if you wish to practise your interpreting skills and broaden your knowledge of cancer terminology in your working languages, we propose the use of the Speech Repository. So, during the European Week Against Cancer 2021, why not chose a speech on skin cancer in English, on breast cancer in Danish, on colorectal cancer in Dutch or on the relation between biological food and cancer in French for your daily dose of interpretation?
Happy practice!
