Luxembourg National Day (23 June)

23/06/2023

On 23 June, around 660,800 Luxembourgers celebrate Luxembourg National Day. From the 18th century this day was celebrated at different dates depending on the monarch at the time. However, in 1961 it was decided to set a fixed date for Luxembourg National Day on 23 June to in order to make the most of the summer weather. The festivities include traditional events such as military parades, but also firework shows, concerts and all sorts of activities.

This small country with a surface area of just 2 600 km2  is a melting pot of cultures, not only because it has 3 official languages (German, French and Luxembourgish) but also because around 47% of its residents are foreigners, representing as many as 180 nationalities. This is related to its high standard of living, a vibrant job market, as well as the fact that its capital hosts several EU institutions and bodies (the Court of Justice of the European Union, some services of the European Commission, the Secretariat of the European Parliament, etc.), making Luxembourg the perfect place for those who want to live and work in a thrilling multicultural environment while still being close to nature and historical buildings.

If you want to practise your interpreting skills in two of Luxembourg’s official languages, we encourage you to visit the German and French sections of the Speech Repository.
