On 11 November, Poland commemorates the anniversary of the restoration of its sovereignty. Poland had been erased from the world map for 123 years when the Second Polish Republic was established in 1918. During those years, the territories that are today part of Poland belonged to the German, Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires. When the Second Polish Republic was established, Poland’s borders were very different from the current ones.
In order to celebrate this day, there are military parades in Warsaw, Poland’s capital city. On top of that, the National Museum opens its doors to all visitors for free, there are concerts and, for sporty types there is even a race in Warsaw, the Independence Run.
Poland became a member state of the European Union in 2004, which was when the country’s language was added to the list of official EU languages. Approximately 50 million people in the EU speak Polish.
